As New York moves toward implementing a “bell-to-bell” cell phone ban in K–12 schools, school leaders face the challenge—and opportunity—of creating environments where students can thrive without constant digital distraction. Leading with Connection invites administrators to approach this shift not just as a compliance issue, but as a chance to strengthen relationships, re-center classroom culture, and support students’ social-emotional well-being. This interactive workshop will help administrators prepare for policy rollout, anticipate areas of resistance, and equip teachers to respond with empathy, clarity, and consistency—especially when students struggle with phone separation.
Participants will:
• Gain a clear understanding of the upcoming NY State bell-to-bell cell phone ban and what it means for their schools.
• Explore how phone-free environments can enhance student engagement, mental health, and school culture.
• Learn proactive strategies to communicate the change with students, staff, and families in a supportive and relational way.
• Identify common student challenges and develop appropriate, compassionate responses for classroom
situations.
• Walk away with planning tools, staff training ideas, and a roadmap for implementation grounded in connection and care.
