JUUL Initiative - Vaping Cessation Program Training: Helping students stop vaping and tobacco use

  • Eastern Suffolk BOCES Instructional Support Center at Sequoya 750 Waverly Avenue Holtsville, New York, 11742 United States (map)

This professional learning session will provide school staff with training in the Stanford REACH Lab's Health Futures: Alternative-to-Suspension Program, an evidence-informed educational intervention designed for students who are found using tobacco or vaping products on school grounds.

Participants will learn how to facilitate either a 2-hour or 4-hour student course that provides students with an opportunity to learn about the health risks associated with tobacco and vaping, reflect on their choices, and develop knowledge and skills to support healthier decision-making. The program is designed to provide an educational response to tobacco and vaping incidents and may be incorporated by schools in lieu of traditional suspension or in conjunction with disciplinary consequences, consistent with each school district's policies and procedures.

The training will focus on both understanding the Healthy Futures curriculum and developing the skills needed to facilitate the course effectively with students. Participants will explore the structure and content of the lessons, facilitation strategies, and ways to create a supportive and meaningful learning experience for students.

Schools are encouraged to attend as a team to consider how Healthy Futures can be incorporated into their existing student discipline, prevention, and wellness practices. Teams will have the opportunity to begin developing an implementation plan, including who will facilitate the program, when and where it will be offered, how students will be referred, and how the program can be integrated into the school's existing response to tobacco and vaping incidents.

By the end of the session, participants will have the foundational knowledge and skills to facilitate the Healthy Futures program and their school team will have an initial roadmap for implementing the program with students.
